Brown eyed angel

The two small girls sat on the verandah
in green and yellow frocks and  identical pigtails
The afternoon stretched
sketching childhood memories in leaves and shadows
A brown-eyed dog  sat looking from one to the other
“Why did you not get 50 in math?”  Asked the one in green
“I get 50 every time and more marks than you in science too ”
she went on swinging her feet
Troubled black eyes met faithful brown ones in silence
a  soft whisper in the dog’s ear and a gentle nudge
The afternoon paused its rambling to look
The dog did not. It bit a tiny foot
A red shoe flew. The house stirred
Life would never be fair or things the same again
at least for the dog
