The picture

November 13, 2010

There is a tall man in the picture
With a smiling lad holding his hand
A scraggly girl with two pigtails
and a rotund woman completes the frame
“My family” says the caption scrawled
with bright crayons, red and green
Though I smile at her childish strokes
It strikes a familiar chord within
Not too long ago, that little girl was me
Filling books with etchings of a family
Rubbing out a not-so-perfect nose, adding a tiny rose
Colours galore under the guava tree
Time flew and brought a little artist new
Yet my little girl and her imagination
paint the very same theme
and I marvel at the persistence of genes.
